Odakle ti Bože ovi drumovi

Song by Odjila

Odakle ti Bože ovi drumovi

Odakle ti Bože ovi drumovi?

Vidiš da su slepi, prokleti?

Što ih, brate ludi takve izmisli,

kad ni jedan tamo ne vodi?

Tamo gde smo zoru čekali,

tamo gde smo rosu ispili,

s’ vetrovima konje jahali

i usnula polja budili.

Da mi podaš pola svojih gradova,

da me pospeš kišom dukata,

da mi kupiš zlatni čardak najveci-

ja do zore moram pobeći!

Tamo, gde smo čergu podigli,

tamo gde smo vatre palili,

dairama zvezde hvatali

masečeve pesme pevali.

Tiho, idemo sa njim, da se Sunce ne naljuti,

da se Nebo ne probudi, jer su umorni,

moji kumovi to su jedini,

pratiće me kad se Belom Zorom oženim!

Hajde, zapevajmo sad,

pa ko hoće nek se budi,

neka čitav svet poludi,

ne moram se ja Zorom ženiti,

Nebom kumiti,

vise volim nju- garavu, tajno ljubiti!

Ruke! Ruke pruži mi!

Nek’ ogrnu noć u belo,

neka moje vrelo telo zorom umiju,

ne trebaju mi bolji drugovi,

niko od nas lepši nije, niko srećniji!

Dušu, dušu uzmi mi!

Nek’ u vatri sva izgorim,

sve dok oči ne zatvorim pesme pevaj mi!

Zlatne kočije noć ce dovesti,

sa usana tvojih ja ću otrov popiti!

Translation:

Where did you, God, get these roads?

Where did you, God, get these roads?
Can’t you see they’re blind, damned?
Why would you, my crazy brother, imagine them like that,
When not one of them goes there?

Where we waited for the dawn,
where we drank the dew,
rode horses with the wind,
waking the sleeping fields.

Even if you gave me half of your towns,
even if you covered me with a rain of gold coins,
even if you bought me the largest castle-
I still need to run away before dawn!

There, where we raised our camp,
where we lit our fires,
caught stars with our tambourines
singing the moon’s songs.

Quietly, we go with him, so we don’t anger the Sun,
so we don’t wake the Sky, because they are tired,
my only godparents they are,
they will follow me when I marry the White Dawn!

Come, let us sing now,
and who wants to can wake up,
the whole world can go mad,
I don’t have to marry the Dawn,
be bound to the sky*,
I prefer to kiss her, the dark one, secretly!

Hands! Give me your hands!
Let them drape the night in white,
let them bathe my hot body with the dawn,
I don’t need better friends.
Nobody is more beautiful than us, nobody is more happy!

Soul, take my soul!
Let me burn all up in flames,
until I close my eyes, sing me songs!
Golden carriages will bring the night,
I will drink poison from your lips!

*First, Dawn can be either a woman or the actual sunrise, the song keeps it very unclear. Secondly, the metaphor is strengthened because, when talking about the Sky and the Sun, they can either be fond ideals, or actual people that help preform a wedding (the KUM is both the godparent, best man, maid of honor, and a sort of brother/sister/father/mother figure).

I’m sorry the song looks so terrible when translated – it’s a word-for-word translation, with almost zero artistic license. Enjoy!
